I know that in a lot of paths the athame handle is black; however, I am more concerned with a material that speaks to me and can help me focus my energies. The shard a picked for my blade is a clear Tibetan quartz it has a lot of rainbows and a strong light energy. The material I'm seeking for the handles must be natural: bone, horn or wood. I want something with a very strong masculine energy, perhaps good in protection magic, good for healing and energy working. I prefer something that grounds well as I am at my best when working with grounded energies. I would love any suggestions that may help point me in the right direction in my search.
I'm sure you could carve a wooden handle. I don't think they type of wood used is as important as whether or not it speaks to you directly. Perhaps walking around a heavily wooded area, a fallen branch might call to you. This way you can also carve symbols and such if you want. I'm not quite familiar with working with horn or bone, and I'm not quite sure where to get those things either.
I'm curious as to how you crafted the Tibetan quarts into a blade though. I would love to make my own athame.
for my personal blade i wanted it raw. Since the athame isn't used for physical cutting I didn't need an edge. Tibetan quartz doesn't tend to get true points (some believe it's due to the turmoil in Tibet) which was factor that almost made me choose a different blade but the stone calls to me I love the energies of it and find myself staring at it for hours. It has a ture enough point to serve my needs and it's a perfect energy battery. There is one thing in that power of it a a bit feminine and since the athame is traditionally a masculine tool in ceremony I'm wanting to balance it with a strong masculine energy handle.... it'll either balance it or crack hehe I guess I'll see. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a153/ ... to0128.jpg
Wonderful Stone, thanks for the pic! I'm curious at what will make your athame different from a wand? I love the symbolism of balancing a feminine with a masculine in one object. I would love hear of your findings after your first use with it.
I suppose intention, but I do plan on making a pummel and hilt on my athame unlike my wand. But with all my brainstorming ideas it may come out very different than I intend and thus end up filling a different role for me. This shard tells me athame though so who am I to argue? My wand will be using holly amethyst Australian quartz and doe skin which should serve my needs well.
